Nicola Tassie is a ceramic sculptor who initially studied painting at the Central School of Art, London. Her wall and free-standing ceramic sculpture reference functional forms. The crossovers between art and craft are a continuing preoccupation in her practice, which presents a contemporary dialogue about ceramics as objects and as art. The conceptual pieces range from the functional, to the functionally ambiguous, to the sculptural, displayed in large-scale installations and ‘still life’ compositions. She is interested in the meaning and reception of ceramics across the craft, design and art thresholds. Delving into the history of ceramics, she investigates its aesthetics, systems of display, and functionality, to comment on notions of status, and the significance of the object in contemporary society.
