Sokari Douglas Camp “useful madness” furniture

We are excited to announce “useful madness” furniture by Sokari Douglas Camp. Chairs and three tables made in lockdown, to unlock cheer in our lives, our houses and our gardens. Contact us for more details and to arrange a viewing.

Sokari writes “These tables are a homage to nature. During the first lockdown I decided to use really thick steel which was left over in the studio: 4 ml sheets that weighed 104 kg. I had to cut the sheets into sections to move them. I wanted to do physical work because I had been in Japan where I had worked on a large structure for a railway wagon. Although fearful during lockdown, I had a lot of energy. Cutting these thick sheets kept me occupied.

The Spring this year was especially beautiful. I was able to walk and cycle and look around me because of the lockdown; we looked at nature without using our cars. Assembling agapanthus-like heads with long stalks I gathered these pieces and found that with a wooden board on top of them I could stand or lie on the structure – I had time to experiment; a lot of letting go in the studio. I liked that I could put a toughened glass surface on the structure and still have a complete view of my assemblage: making ‘useful madness’.”

The glass tops can be 112 cm or 180 cm in diameter. The tables are made stable by putting clear rubber bumpers on the steel to protect the glass when it is put on top of the steel.

The Painted Table is for inside spaces and the Galvanised Table and Lockdown Table can be inside or outside. The steel chairs can be varnished for the outdoors and painted a colour of your choice.
